Itinerary

Our itinerary is planned, but we are always prepared to change things up based on weather and light conditions.

DAY 1

We'll meet at the Visitor Center parking lot for a meet and greet before we dive into our astrophotography tips for the evening. We will have sack-lunch dinners (and plenty of snacks) for the group, so come prepared to be outside, because we're going for a hike to our photo location! We'll walk out to our favorite location in the park, taking our time to enjoy the sights and sounds of this incredible national park. We’ll photograph sunset, blue hour, and stay out into the evening to photograph the Milky Way over Mount Rainier. The hike is moderate in difficulty, but bring clothes for potentially inclement and cooler weather because we'll be staying out past dark for astrophotography and the temperature can vary quite a bit in alpine environments.

DAYs 2 & 3

Saturday, August 12th and Sunday, August 13th

Sleep is for people who didn't just pay for a photo workshop, so we're getting up early this morning and driving to the unparalleled sunrise spot of Tipsoo Lake. After sunrise we'll drive back towards our hotels for a delicious breakfast at a local diner and your choice of editing sessions or afternoon naps before sunset. We'll be making our sunset/astrophotography decisions on this day based on cloud formations and weather predictions, but the plan is to go out and shoot, shoot, shoot!

Sunday will again begin early with a sunrise shoot from Reflection Lakes and some casual day hikes around the Paradise side of the mountain. We'll spend the day discussing some final pointers and editing tips before embarking on an easy sunset hike to PInnacle Peak (Nate's favorite view of the mountain).

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

You’re Sony ambassadors, Do i have to bring a Sony camera?

No! Feel free to bring whatever camera you choose. The more familiar you are with your camera, the better results you’ll get.

What skill level is required to attend?

All photography levels are welcome, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro.

What fitness level is expected?

Moderate. We won’t be doing any rigorous hikes, but the hikes we have planned are between 3-6 miles. The highest point we’ll be hiking to is around 7200 feet (2200 meters).

What is the age range of the group?

All ages are welcome! We typically have a variety of ages, but we’ve had participants ranging from their teens all the way through their 80s.

Is this going to be the most fun I've ever had?

Yes. It's very likely you'll never recover, and may struggle to attain this level of happiness ever again. Life will be bleak after this workshop and you'll be craving the next opportunity to hang out with Nate and Autumn in the wild. Fret not, little one, more workshops are around the corner!

Where should I book lodging?

We recommend booking your stay at one of the hotels at the base of Crystal Mountain, which is the closest we can get to Mt. Rainier (about 45 minutes). Please reach out to us via the form at the bottom of this page if you have more questions.

What is the food like?

We’ll hop around to a few different restaurants but expect mostly American-style food. The restaurant near our hotel serves great American-European food. The menu changes seasonally and is inspired by local ingredients. You’ll find pasta, salads, and steaks along with their signature Hungarian Goulash, Wiener Schnitzel, and Fennel Sausage Pasta. If you have any food restrictions and/or allergies, please let us know ahead of time.

How cold will it be?

Temperatures will be seasonable, so come prepared for potential cold/rainy weather but expect warm days and seasonably cool nights. One thing to note is that even though our trip is in August, Mt. Rainier creates his own weather. As the sun goes down, it will get quite chilly, so please bring layers. Also, once we get to our shooting destinations we’re going to be spending a lot of time standing outside, and that tends to make it feel significantly colder than it actually is.
